Start with the species
Timing depends on the plant. Spring-flowering shrubs are best pruned soon after they bloom, so you do not cut off next year's flowers. Shrubs that flower later in the year are usually pruned before the new growth starts. If you are not sure what you have, ask before cutting.
Avoid the hottest weeks
Heavy pruning in the peak of summer heat puts extra stress on a plant. Light shaping is fine, but leave hard cutting for milder weeks.
Trim hedges little and often
A hedge that is trimmed regularly stays dense and keeps its line. Letting it grow wild and then cutting it back hard is harder on the plant, and how hard you can cut depends on the species.
Palms need less than people think
A palm only needs dead or hanging fronds and old flower or fruit stalks removed. Cutting healthy green fronds weakens it.
Small trees and big trees
Our packages cover small trees and seasonal palm trimming. For anything larger, send us photos and the location and we will tell you whether we can take it on.
